The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has significantly raised the estimates of global cotton production, trade, use and ending stocks for 2017-18. The United States, Australia, India and Brazil will be the major exporters of cotton.The FAS forecasts Indonesia, Mexico, Vietnam and Bangladesh will be the four major cotton importers in the next US fiscal, according to an August USDA circular.

The European Commission (EU) has recently issued a notice in its official journal establishing the ecological criteria for the award of the EU Ecolabel to textile products by amending certain clauses. The notice modifies the definition of textile products to include intermediate products that can now benefit from the environment-friendly label.
The validity of the Ecolabel requirements for textile products has been extended to 78 months. The criteria were due to expire in June 2018.

Over 300 textile and garment units in India have agreed transition to production practices that ensure safety and well-being of workers and protection of the environment under the initiative of the government of Netherlands, a huge importer of fabrics and also a champion of labour and environment issues.
The agreement, which will be governed by Netherlands laws and is signed by Dutch minister for foreign trade and development EMP Ploumen, has 64 companies, representing 80 consumer brands.

Pakistan government revises cotton output target by 10.26 percent to 12.60 million bales for the current season of 2017/18 over an earlier target of 14.04 million bales as the country’s biggest crop producer Punjab fell short of targeted cultivation area for the current year as it was missed by 11.4 percent compared with the official target, which would translate into 12 percent drop in production. Tianyuan Garments Company of Suzhou has signed an agreement with SoftWear Automation of Atlanta to develop a fully automated T-shirt production line at Tianyuan's newly acquired plant in Little Rock, Arkansas, in July.
